Black-tailed Jackrabbit
(Lepus californicus)
These non-game animals are found at desert and sub-montane elevations throughout the Reserve. Breeding can occur year-round. One to four litters per year are born in deep depressions lined with hair. There is a 41-47 day gestation period. The 1 to 8 young are weaned in 2-3 weeks and dispersed at four weeks of age. Jack rabbits occupy home range sizes of 49-74 acres. They also concentrate in winter feeding areas. They feed on lush vegetation in the summer and woody and dried vegetation in the winter.
